FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU football wrapped up its winter conditioning program with its annual Night of Champions Thursday night at the Walsh Complex. Three team records fell in the event, which showcased 19 of the Horned Frogs' most accomplished weightlifters.
Offensive lineman Zach Bray led off the group of record-breakers, as he bench pressed 630 pounds to shatter the previous mark of 575. Fellow offensive lineman Shane Sims joined Bray as the first Frogs to ever bench 600 pounds.
Defensive tackle Brandon Johnson lifted 860 pounds in the squat to break the team record set by teammate Anthony Alabi during last year's Night of Champions.
Rounding out the list of new team record holders is defensive end Bo Schobel. The defending first-team all-Conference USA selection lifted 465 pounds in the power clean to set the new team mark.
The night culminated with the presentation of TCU's annual Iron Frog Awards. The awards are based on a Power Index, which is determined by adding the combined weight lifted this winter in the bench, squat and power clean, divided by the player's weight.
Taking the Iron Frog for the skill position group was defensive back Tyrone Sanders, who lifted a combined 1,520 pounds. In the standup position category, tight end Cody McCarty took home the Iron Frog with a combined lift of 1,600 pounds. Schobel combined to lift 1,599 pounds to win the under-300 pound lineman category, while Johnson's combined 1,765 pounds earned him the Iron Frog for the over-300 pound linemen.
"Every year I say that we have gotten as strong as we are going to get, but on this night our players continue to prove me wrong," TCU head coach Gary Patterson said. "The efforts of our players and of strength and conditioning coach Don Sommer and his staff make us a better team when we take the field."
The Horned Frogs will officially begin spring practice on Monday, March 3 when they take the field for the first of 15 spring practices. The spring practices will come to a close with the annual Spring Game on Saturday, April 5.
