TCU Head Football Coach Gary Patterson has been tabbed by the AFCA to fill the final coaching staff slot at the 2004 Hula Bowl Maui.
Patterson is 27-10 in three seasons as the Horned Frogs' head coach. TCU was 11-1 in the 2003 regular season and qualified for their sixth consecutive bowl game.
Patterson joins 2001 AFCA Co-Coach of the Year Ralph Friedgen of Maryland, 2002 AFCA Coach of Year Jim Tressel of Ohio State, Colorado's Gary Barnett and San Jose State's Fitz Hill as the Division I-A coaches headed to Maui for this season's game.
Friedgen and Tressel will be the head coaches of the Kai and Aina teams respectively. Patterson, Barnett and the AFCA's 2003 Division II National Coach of the Year will work with Friedgen while Hill and the Division I-AA and Division III National Coaches of the Year will work with Tressel.
A former assistant at Colorado early in his career, Barnett returned to Boulder in 1999 to take over the Buffalo program. Since his arrival, Colorado has won the 2001 Big 12 title and the 2001 and 2002 North Division crowns.
Hill came to San Jose State from the University of Arkansas. He spent 11 seasons with the Razorbacks, getting his start as a volunteer assistant. After two seasons as a volunteer, Hill was elevated to wide receivers coach. He added recruiting coordinator to his duties and was named assistant head coach in his final season in Fayetteville.
Tressel is 23-2 over the last two seasons at Ohio State. He led the Buckeyes to an unbeaten season and the national championship in 2002.
Friedgen earned AFCA co-National Coach of the Year honors in 2001 when he led his alma mater to a 10-2 record and a berth in the Orange Bowl in his first year as a head coach.
The Hula Bowl will be played January 17, 2004 at War Memorial Stadium on the island of Maui and will once again be televised nationally by ESPN at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.
