FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs jumped out to a 20-point advantage in the first half, then held off a fierce second-half rally by the EA Sports Southwest All-Stars to win by a 94-90 count on Friday night in Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The Horned Frogs finished the exhibition portion of their schedule with a perfect 2-0 record.
TCU raced out to a 29-9 lead in the first nine-plus minutes of the game thanks to outstanding shooting. Junior forward Aaron Curtis drained both of his three-point attempts during the Frogs' run. TCU maintained a double-digit lead throughout the rest of the first half and took a 53-35 advantage into the locker room. The Frogs shot 48.8 percent from the field in the first stanza, including 52.9 percent (9-for-17) from three-point range.
However, EA Sports turned the tables in the second half, hitting on 11of-21 treys and making 18 of their 38 shot attempts. In the process, EA earned its first lead of the game, 90-89, with 1:05 left to play. However, TCU freshman center Femi Ibikunle came up big in the final minute, hitting a jumper in the paint, making three-of-four free throws and securing a key defensive rebound. All five of his points came in the final 47 seconds and accounted for the 94-90 final.
Junior Corey Valsin paced the Frogs with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Four other TCU players (Curtis-12, Marcus Shropshire-11, Corey Santee-10 and Chudi Chinweze-10) reached double-figures. Santee posted a double-double on the evening as he dished out a game-high 10 assists.
For the second straight game, the Horned Frogs enjoyed a 10-rebound advantage over their opponents. TCU begins the regular season at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 7:05 p.m. against Texas-Arlington. For tickets, call (817) 257-FROG.
