Fort Worth, Texas - TCU Head soccer coach David Rubinson has announced that sophomore midfielder Moran Lavi will take a two-week absence from the team in order to return to her home country of Israel to compete in the qualifying round for the 2004 European Cup.
Lavi left for her homeland on Sunday, October 12. She will join the team in Israel and begin workouts in preparation for the October 18 match against Belarus. Due to civil conflicts in Israel, the game will be played in Belarus. Following the match, Lavi will return to Israel before heading back to the United States. She is expected to rejoin the TCU team on Thursday, October 23, missing only two matches.
Lavi is no stranger to international competition, as she has made over 30 appearances for her national team. She started for the squad in a 4-1 victory over Estonia on August 10 and wore the captain's band for the final 20 minutes of the contest. She missed the team's second qualifying match on September 14 vs. Kazakhstan in which the teams played to a 0-0 tie. Israel is currently first in its group, just ahead of Belarus.
"Anytime you have the opportunity to play for your country, it's a great thing and you have to take the chance," said Head Coach David Rubinson. "It's a rough time for us to lose her, but we're extremely happy for her."
