Following his runner-up finish in the 100th Western Amateur Championship, TCU senior golfer Adam Rubinson is ranked sixth in the August 5 Golfweek/Titleist Men's Amateur Rankings. Rubinson was ranked 23rd in the previous rankings.
Rubinson was defeated by Texas senior John Klauk, 6 and 5, in the championship match on August 4. Earlier in the day, Rubinson defeated Brady Stockton of Arizona State, 2 and 1, to advance to the championship match.
"He (Klauk) was amazing on the front nine," said Rubinson, who witnessed Klauk's six-under 29 on the front nine. "You have to give John all the credit, because he ripped the course up. It was one of my most enjoyable experiences. Playing in front of two or three thousand people is something that I will never forget. The spectators were very supportive, rooting me on. And that was comforting to me. I look forward to having the opportunity to play in the Western Amateur again next summer."
In the Sunday morning semifinal, Rubinson birdied four of the first nine holes to take a 3-up lead against Stockton, the Pacific Northwest Amateur Champion. He also posted wins over Bill Haas, 1-up, in the quarterfinals, and Casey Wittenberg, 2 and 1, in the first round.
Rubinson also finished runner-up at the NCAA Championships, falling short of the individual title by a single stroke. His seven-under par score of 277 was good for second place among the 156 participants at the 2002 NCAA Championships. It matched the highest finish ever for a Horned Frog golfer at the national tournament, and also tied his career-best finish. Rubinson finished the season as the nation's 46th rated college player.
"Both of the runner-up finishes are great confidence boosters," said Rubinson. "Entering both tournaments, I was not hitting the ball as well as I would like to. However, I was still able to finish well, despite not being in top form."
