The 2002 edition of TCU football officially got underway on Monday when the full squad took the field for the first time, going through a pair of workouts on the TCU practice fields. The Horned Frogs worked in the warm Texas sun, practicing at both 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
"It didn't look like we had many cramps, so we did a good job hydrating the players," said head coach Gary Patterson. "We took enough breaks to get them water and keep them on the field.
"There were not really many surprises," continued Patterson. "I thought (cornerback) Mark Walker had a good practice this morning. LaTarence Dunbar had a full day on defense and did a good job. Offensively, I thought the front people looked a lot more confident than a year ago."
"We're a lot further along than last year," added offensive coordinator Mike Schultz. "But this was just the first practice. We're not where we want to be yet. We still have a lot to work on."
"We had a good tempo," added senior defensive tackle John Turntine. "We were ready to hit somebody. This afternoon, the young guys showed me some things. There are going to be some good players playing here in the next couple of years. We put in a lot of hard work this summer and I thought the veteran leadership really showed today.
"It's all about family," continued Turntine. "We all have the same goal - that's to win a championship."
The Frogs will be on the field again on Tuesday as two-a-days continue. Practices are again scheduled for 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
