COLUMBUS, Ohio - The TCU men's golf team shot a one-under par score of 283 in Wednesday's opening round at the 2002 NCAA Championships at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. Half of the field is now through today's play, and just five of the first 15 teams have ended the day at par or better. Colorado posted the best round thus far with a four-under 280. The Buffaloes are followed by Arizona (282), TCU (283), Florida (283) and Toledo (283).
"We played really well today and put a pretty good mark on the board," head coach Bill Montigel said. "This is a very tough course and anything at or under par is really solid. The guys showed a lot of character today. They really came out focused."
TCU made the turn with a team score of four-over par (144), but made an impressive run on the second nine. The Horned Frogs, who teed off on No. 10 to begin the day, played the front nine at five-under (139) to move up the leaderboard.
Leading the charge was junior Adam Rubinson, who fired a two-under par 69. Rubinson was super on the second nine holes with a score of 33 (-3). He eagled the par-5 No. 4, had a pair of birdies and one bogey over that time.
Fellow Frog Bret Guetz registered his 10th consecutive par-or-better round, as he closed the day with a 70 (-1). He played the final nine holes bogey-free, picking up seven pars and two birdies. Andy Doeden notched an even-par 71 to help the Frogs' cause.
Steve Shuert was solid down the stretch, playing the final six holes at one-under par. The senior finished day one with a 73 (+2). Freshman J.J. Killeen's card of 74 did not count in the team's score.
The other 15 teams had afternoon tee times. Live individual and team scoring of the NCAA Championships can be found on www.golfstat.com throughout the entire 72-hole tournament.
TCU is making its ninth appearance in the NCAA Championships since 1990. It is the first NCAA Championships experience for Rubinson, Shuert and Killeen. Doeden placed tied for 20th and Guetz shared 38th place at the 2000 NCAAs. TCU's best finish under Montigel was a tie for seventh place in 1997.
The seventh-ranked Frogs continue play in the tournament on Thursday afternoon beginning at 1:03 p.m. (ET) on the 1st tee. Tee times for the third and fourth rounds on Friday and Saturday have not been set.
