MALIBU, Calif. -- The 31st-ranked TCU men's tennis team (8-5) was unable to come up with a second straight upset on Sunday, falling to No. 11 Pepperdine (14-4) 4-0 in the finals of the Pepperdine Shootout at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, California. The Frogs advanced to the finals by upsetting No. 26 Washington on Saturday by a 4-3 score. The Huskies (13-2) suffered their second consecutive loss in the consolation match of the shootout with No. 33 Arizona State (8-5) by a 4-2 count.
Pepperdine won the doubles after the 29th-ranked duo of Al Garland and Johan Berg defeated freshman Fabrizio Sestini and junior Toni Gordon, ranked 51st nationally, by an 8-4 count at one, while Calle Hansen and Brian Wright scored an 8-5 win at three over freshman Chris Brandi and sophomore Alex Menichini. TCU freshmen Daniel Scholten and Jacob Martin's match with 15th-ranked Sebastien Graeff and Stefan Suter was suspended once the Waves had secured the doubles point.
Things did not get any better for the Horned Frogs in singles as they dropped three matches in straight sets to give Pepperdine the 4-0 victory. At one, No. 3 Garland dropped 70th-ranked Sestini 6-2, 6-2, while his doubles partner Berg defeated senior Daniel Wajnberg 6-4, 6-3 at the five slot. Pepperdine's final victory came at six with Diego Acuna's 6-4, 6-2 win over Scholten. The matches being played at two, three and four singles were all suspended once the Waves were assured the victory.
TCU will return home for its next two matches against No. 10 Texas A&M on Wednesday, March 27 and No. 39 Rice on Saturday, March 30. Both matches will begin at 2:30 p.m. on the Bernard J. "Tut" Bartzen Varsity Tennis Courts at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
