WACO, Texas -- The 32nd-ranked TCU men's tennis team (6-4) had its two-match win streak snapped Thursday, falling to No. 10 Baylor (10-1) by a 6-1 count in Waco, Texas at the Baylor Tennis Center. For the Horned Frogs, it was their most lopsided loss since the 1998 season when TCU lost to Texas on April 18 by the same score. Despite owning a 5-30 all-time record against the Horned Frogs since 1974, Baylor has now won four of the last six meetings with TCU.
The Frogs got off to a sluggish start in the doubles, dropping all three matches for only the second time this season. The Bears' duo of Benjamin Becker and Zoltan Papp picked up Baylor's first victory at two doubles over freshman Daniel Scholten and sophomore Alex Menichini by an 8-3 score. Minutes after their win, the doubles point was clinched at the three spot with Reiner Neurohr and Matias Marin's 8-6 triumph over TCU freshman Jacob Martin and senior Daniel Wajnberg.
The Frogs' struggles carried over in the singles matches as they dropped five of six in straight sets. The lone bright spot came at three singles where Menichini pulled off the biggest upset of his career by defeating 42nd-ranked Markus Hornung 6-7, 6-4, 7-6. The win also marked Menichini's first career win over a ranked opponent and extended his win streak to six matches.
"We didn't play our best tonight," said TCU head coach Joey Riv? after the match. "We came out flat and dug ourselves in too deep of a hole. It's a tough loss for us, but I think we can continue to learn something from every match we play, win or lose."
TCU returns home to the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on Monday, March 18 to face No. 69 Colorado (7-3) at 2:00 p.m. The Frogs will then head to Malibu, California to take on No. 17 Washington (13-0) in the opening round of the Pepperdine Shootout on Saturday, March 23.
