Women's Tennis Tops Rice, 6-1, on the Road

HOUSTON, Texas - The 22nd-ranked TCU women's tennis team earned a 6-1 win against former WAC rival, Rice on Saturday at Jake Hess Stadium. The Frogs moved to 7-3 on the season, while Rice falls to 6-8.
The Frogs, who swept the doubles matches on Saturday, are 7-0 when winning the doubles point. At one doubles, the 24th-ranked duo of Paty Aburto and Rosa Perez defeated Jeri Gonzales and Yasmin Fisher, 8-4. Brenna Shackelford teamed with Saber Pierce to outlast Judith Hagedorn and Annie Goodrich, 8-6, at No. 2. Katrin Gaber and Karla Mancinas continued their winning ways at the third spot with their 8-3 win against Natalie Briaud and Karen Chao.
TCU was able to garner wins at Nos.1 through 5 singles. No. 89 Paty Aburto topped Natalie Briaud at No. 1, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9), while 134th-ranked Katrin Gaber earned a straight-set win over Jeri Gonzales, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2. Saber Pierce, ranked No. 108, earned her fifth consecutive straight-set win of the season with her defeat of Judith Hagedorn at the third spot, 6-3, 6-1. Playing four singles, Rosa Perez picked up the 6-1, 6-2 victory over Annie Goodrich. Ivonne Andrade, playing No. 5, captured the win against Stephanie Moat, 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3).
TCU finishes its trip to Houston Sunday as the Frogs meet Conference USA foe Houston on Feb. 24 at 11:00 a.m. The squad's next home match will be on March 2 versus UCF beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
