Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year, TCU senior linebacker LaMarcus McDonald, has been selected to the 2002 All-America first team unit by collegefootballnews.com.
"If one word could describe McDonald, it would be active. He's always moving, and always in on every play. He can do it all from blitzing, hanging back in pass coverage, or stopping the run," according to the Collegefootballnews.com website.
Earlier this season, the same site had this to say about McDonald: "The Horned Frog star is finally starting to get some national acclaim after his brilliant, nationally televised performance against Southern Miss. Few have consistently made the plays he has all season long. Right now, he's America's best linebacker."
McDonald led Conference USA with 28 tackles for loss, registering a total of 113 tackles (73 solo), which ranked fifth in the conference. He finished second in the league in sacks with 10 and recovered three fumbles. He led TCU in tackles in 10 of 11 games to help the unit to the top national ranking in rushing defense (62.6 yards per game) and second in total defense (249.5) en route to the conference title and a trip to the AXA Liberty Bowl.
Placekicker Nick Browne and kick returner LaTarence Dunbar earned honorable mention honors.
Collegefootballnews.com also lists an all-conference team for Conference USA. The Frogs were represented on the first team by offensive lineman Jamal Powell, running back Lonta Hobbs, placekicker Nick Browne, defensive end Bo Schobel, linebacker LaMarcus McDonald and cornerback Jason Goss. McDonald was selected as the league's Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, while Lonta Hobbs was named the Freshman of the Year.
