TCU Golfer Rubinson Invited to Walker Cup Session

FORT WORTH, Texas - The United States Golf Association has invited 23 of the nation's leading amateurs, including TCU senior Adam Rubinson, to participate in a three-day practice session for the 2003 Walker Cup Match. Fifteen of the 23 are currently playing collegiate golf. Rubinson, a two-time all-conference performer, earned honorable mention All-America status after placing second at the 2002 NCAA Championships.
For the first time, the USGA will host the practice session to help determine who is selected for the U.S. Walker Cup team that will face the team from Great Britain and Ireland at the Ganton Golf Club in North Yorkshire, England, from Sept. 6-7, 2003. The practice session for prospective team members is scheduled for Nov. 29-Dec. 1, 2002, at Berkeley Hall Club, Hilton Head Island, S.C.
"We are trying to develop the strongest 2003 squad we can and this will be a wonderful opportunity for the players to meet and get to know each other," said Fred Ridley, USGA vice president and chairman of the USGA international team selection committee.
Ridley pointed out that while the players invited are among the top contenders for a spot on the Walker Cup team, final selections have not been made. Players who have not been chosen to attend this practice session can still earn a place on the 10-member team based on their future performances in competition.
"There are still opportunities for players outside the invitee list to be selected if they have good performances over the next nine months," Ridley said.
Bob Lewis Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio, a member of four consecutive victorious U.S. Walker Cup teams, is captain of the 2003 squad. While the U.S. leads in the 80-year-old competition, 31-6, with one tie, the U.S. team lost the last two encounters.
