Two Frog Duos Advance to Round of 16 Action

FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU women's tennis placed two duos into the round of 16 at the 2002 Omni Hotels Southwest Regional Championships being held at TCU's Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center this weekend. The 16th-ranked pair of senior Rosa Perez and junior Paty Aburto will take on Nicole Bouffler and Svenja Fuhrig in Sunday's action. The tandem of junior Saber Pierce and sophomore Karla Mancinas will meet Conference USA opponents Jenny Kuhn and Julie Smekodub of Tulane in their match. On the singles side, Aburto, Perez and senior Brenna Shackelford all advanced out of the first round to earn playing time on day two. Aburto defeated Margaret Potyrala of Southwest Texas State, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2, in the second round, while Perez topped Mindy Ko of Rice in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. Shackelford fell to 17-seed Daria Potapova of Baylor, 6-4, 6-2. Neither Aburto nor Perez could win their third round matches. Aburto was defeated by Julieta Lillo of Arkansas-Little Rock (6-1, 6-3), and Lauren Archer of Rice topped Perez in three (6-1, 1-6, 6-2).
Action continues Sunday and Monday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. Consolation rounds will begin at 8:00 a.m. Sunday, with main draw action starting at 9:30 a.m. Finals are scheduled for Monday beginning at 9:00 a.m.
