Fort Worth, Texas (April 30, 2001) - After winning its second-consecutive Western Athletic Conference Championship on Sunday, against 10th-ranked Fresno State, TCU women's tennis head coach Roland Ingram was named WAC Coach of the Year on Monday, for the second-consecutive season. Also earning a WAC award was TCU freshman Paty Aburto, who was named Freshman of the Year for the 2001 season.
Aburto, from Xalapa, Mexico, was also named to the all-WAC singles first team, along with Katrin Gaber, a junior from Anger, Austria. Aburto is 18-3 in dual matches this spring. Aburto's 7-5, 7-6 (4) win over 44th-ranked Liesl Fichtbauer of Fresno State on Sunday, clinched the Frogs' win over the Bulldogs for the conference title. Gaber was 10-10 this spring, spending most of her playing time at no. 1 singles. Gaber won both of her matches against Tulsa and Rice in the WAC Tournament.
Gaber and her doubles partner Karolina Roubickova, a freshman from Prague, Czech Republic, were also named to the all-WAC doubles second team. The duo was 8-13 this spring and played 13 matches at no. 1 doubles. Gaber and Roubickova also won both of their matches at the WAC tournament against Rice and Tulsa.
This marks Ingram's 18th season at the helm of the TCU women's tennis team. This season he coached a squad with only two returners from last year's WAC Championship team. On April 7, Ingram earned his 300th career victory against Houston. Ingram's record is currently 306-149 (.672).
TCU is 20-3 this season and on a 17-match win streak. By winning the WAC tournament, the Frogs earned an automatic bid the 2001 NCAA Tournament. Pairings for the tournament will be released on Thursday, May 4.
