Fresno State avoids sweep, defeats TCU, 7-5

Fresno, California ? Josh Labandeira had three hits, including his 11th home run, to lead Fresno State to a 7-5 win over TCU Sunday at Pete Beiden Field. The Frogs, which had won the first two games of the series, drop to 27-19 overall, 17-9 in Western Athletic Conference play. Fresno State improves to 29-19 overall, 13-11 in WAC action. The second-place Frogs now lead the third-place Bulldogs by three games in the WAC standings. Rice is in first place with a WAC record of 21-6.
The Bulldogs scored four runs in the first on four hits, the biggest a two-run double by Brandon Gemoll. Labandeira singled and scored a run in the first, the first of his three hits. Labandeira doubled and scored in the third on Gemoll?s RBI-single. Labandeira?s two-run home run in the fifth proved to be the difference in the game as it extended the Fresno State lead to 7-4.
TCU came up with a pair of runs in the third, cutting the deficit to 4-2. Justin Crowder doubled and scored on Terry Trofholz? double, then Ontiveros lined a single to center, scoring Trofholz. After Fresno had pushed the lead to 5-2, TCU came up with two more runs in the fifth on three hits. Crowder singled and Rivera doubled to start the inning. Trofholz singled, driving in Crowder and sending Rivera to third. Ontiveros drove in Rivera on a deep fly ball to center field that was dropped by Dan Young. Mike Settle?s solo home run in the sixth accounted for the final run.
Fresno reliever Nick Moran improved his record to 3-4. He allowed one run on four hits in 3.1 innings of middle relief. Ben Fritz pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn his fifth save of the season. TCU starter David Tombrella allowed seven runs on 10 hits in six innings to suffer the loss. Patrick Newburn pitched the final two innings without allowing a run.
Trofholz and Ontiveros led the Frogs with three hits each, while Crowder had two hits. The 3-4-5-6 hitters in the TCU lineup were a combined 2-of-15.
TCU will return to action on Tuesday, April 24, when they host Texas Tech at the TCU Diamond. First-pitch is scheduled for 2:35 p.m.
