Austin, Texas - Erick Macha's three-run home run in the first was all TCU needed Tuesday as they defeated the Texas Longhorns, 7-2 at Disch-Falk Field. The Frogs improve to 12-6 overall, while Texas drops to 12-9.
The win was TCU's second over the Longhorns in the 2001 season. TCU defeated Texas, 2-1, in the Astros College Classic on February 4.
Macha provided the Frogs with an early 3-0 lead, when he connected for a three-run home run to left in the first inning. Terry Trofholz led the inning off with an infield single, then Justin Crowder was hit by the pitch. Texas starter Justin Simmons retired the next two hitters before allowing the home run to Macha.
David Tombrella pitched the first five innings for the Frogs. He allowed only two runs on six hits and one walk with a pair of strikeouts to earn his second win of the year. Clayton Jerome pitched the final four innings to record his first career save. Jerome allowed three hits, one walk and struck out four in four innings. The freshman right hander picked up the win against Texas in the 2-1 win in Houston.
The Frogs scored four insurance runs in the eighth to increase the lead to 7-2. In the eighth, TCU took advantage of two Texas errors, and four hits, including a two-run single by Walter Olmstead. All four runs in the eighth came with two outs. Trofholz led TCU with two hits and two runs scored, while Olmstead and Macha accounted for five of the runs batted in.
TCU will travel to San Marcos tomorrow (Wednesday, March 7) to play Southwest Texas. First-pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
