Fort Worth - Finally, after three consecutive rainouts, TCU returned to play Sunday, sweeping a doubleheader against Texas-Pan American at the TCU Diamond. The Frogs won the opener, 9-5, then took game two by a score of 21-2. The Frogs improve to 11-6 overall, while UTPA drops to 1-17.
The Frogs won the first game on the strength of a seven-run second inning. All five of TCUs hits in the contest came in the second inning. Ramon Moses drove in three on a bases loaded triple, and Walter Olmstead knocked in two runs on a double. TCU had only the five hits in the game, but they walked seven times and reached twice after being hit by a pitch.
Chris Bradshaw (4-1) earned the win, allowing four runs in five innings with eight strikeouts. Stan Newton pitched the final two innings, striking out three to earn his second save of the season. Newton entered the game in the sixth with the bases loaded and no outs. He retired all three men he faced in the inning, allowing one run on a groundout.
In the second game, TCU had season-highs in both runs and hits to complete the sweep. The Frogs scored only one run in the first, when Terry Trofholz stole home. After adding two more runs in the second, the Frogs put together back-to-back seven run innings, increasing the lead to 17-1. In the third, the seven runs came on only three hits, including a grand slam by Olmstead, as the Frogs took advantage of three walks, a hit batsmen and two UTPA errors.
The TCU bats did the damage in the fourth, scoring the seven runs on nine hits, including a two-run double by Tom Bates. All seven runs came with two outs in the inning. The Frogs scored four more runs in the fifth on three hits, including a triple by Terry Trofholz. Trofholz, Bates and Jason Price each had three hits, while Olmstead and Bates drove in five runs apiece.
Justin Crowder (3-1) earned the win, allowing one run in 2.2 innings of middle relief. Chad Durham started the game, but was pulled in the third. Durham allowed one run on one hit, two walks, a hit batsmen and five strikeouts. The TCU pitching staff recorded 12 Ks in the second game after striking out 11 in the opener.
TCU returns to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Austin to face the Texas Longhorns. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
