The 2001 recruiting class: "We met the position needs that we were looking for -- offensive linemen, safeties and a kicker. We lost four offensive linemen from the 2000 team, so it was important to sign a solid group of linemen. We graduated five safeties, so we needed to sign some more defensive backs. We have placed a high priority on signing defensive backs in each of the last two classes that fit our scheme. Plus, with the loss of Chris Kaylakie, we needed to sign another kicker, and we found a great one in Mike Wynn." "We signed another top quarterback, which is something that we want to do every year. Tye Gunn was the Texas 3A Player of the year, and he led LaGrange to the state championship. He ended his high school career with over 9,200 yards of total offense, so he should fit right in with our offense. In addition to Tye, we signed five or six top-100 players that we are excited about joining our program. The rest of the group is a great evaluation class, similar to the senior class that took us to three straight bowl games."
The impact of the 2000 season: "There is no doubt that our success last season had a big impact on this signing class. It was not just the 10-2 record and the national ranking, but I think playing on television every week played a big role. Players know that with us moving to Conference USA and playing on television every week, that they will gain a lot of exposure while they are at TCU. Playing on television probably helped us get some early commitments. We have gained a lot of national prominence over the last several years. I think players recognize that this is one of the top programs not only in Texas, but also in the country."
