HOUSTON - TCU held Texas to four hits Sunday to knock off the Longhorns, 2-1, in the final game of the Astros College Classic. Texas saw their record drop to 0-4, including an 0-3 record in the Astros College Classic. The Frogs are now 3-2 this season. The Frogs won one of three games in the Astros College Classic.
Freshman reliever Clayton Jerome pitched four shutout innings to earn his first college win. Jerome allowed two hits, one walk and three strikeouts in the outing. The win ended Texas three-game winning streak over TCU, and allowed non- Big 12 teams to win six of the nine games in the inaugural classic.
TCU took the lead in the top of the seventh inning, pushing across one run on three hits and a walk. After Tom Bates drew a one-out walk, the Frogs put together three consecutive basehits, including a bases loaded RBI-bunt single by Justin Crowder.
The Frogs jumped out to an early 1-0, scoring a single run in the first inning. Second baseman Ramon Moses led off the game with a single to left, advanced to second on Jason Prices sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Walter Olmstead doubled to left center, driving in Moses for the first run.
The Horns had several chances early in the game, but struggled to get a hit with men on base. Texas finally got their first run in the fifth, when second baseman Wayne Stone homered to left field. Texas left seven men on base, including six in the first four innings.
TCU starter Chad Durham pitched well in his second start of the year. Durham, allowed only the one run on two hits in five innings pitched. However, he did hit four Texas hitters, including three consecutive in the second inning. With one out in the second, Durham hit Sam Anderson, Omar Quintanilla and Jeff Ontiveros. He then got out of trouble by retiring Frankie Contreras on a foul out to Justin Crowder at first, then a fly out to center by Stone.
Olmstead led TCU with two hits, including a double. Crowder also picked up a pair of hits in his first start at first base.
The game was the first of three this season between TCU and Texas. The Frogs will travel to Austin to face Texas on March 6, then they will host the Horns at The Ballpark in Arlington on April 17. TCU will return to action on Wednesday, when they face the Missouri Southern at the TCU DIamond. Game time is 2:05 p.m.
