TCU defeats Hilo, 12-0, sweeps series

FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU's Chad Durham and Stan Newton combined to shutout Hilo, 12-0, allowing only five hits in the win. The Frogs improve to 7-5 overall, 3-0 in Western Athletic Conference play. Hilo drops to 3-11 overall, 2-4 in WAC action.
Durham held the Vulcans to four hits, one walk, while striking out five in seven innings. After allowing a leadoff double to Brian Rooke, Durham retired the next nine men. Newton pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts.
In the series, the TCU pitching staff held Hilo to three runs on only 14 hits. In Sunday's doubleheader, Chris Bradshaw pitched a complete game five hitter, holding the Vulcans to two runs. In the second game of the twinbill, Justin Crowder allowed only one run on four hits in his complete game effort.
The Frogs scored three runs in the second on four hits, including a RBI-single by Rudy Rivera. TCU broke the game open in the third, scoring six runs on five hits, two walks and two Hilo errors. Mike Settle doubled down the left field line, driving home Jason Price, who had led the inning off with a walk. The double by Settle extended his hitting streak to a season-high 11 games. Settle ended the afternoon with two runs, two hits and a pair of runs batted in. Rivera, Justin Crowder, Erick Macha, Price and Terry Trofholz each had two hits for the Frogs.
TCU will return to action on Tuesday, February 20, when they host the Oklahoma Sooners at the TCU Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
