Fort Worth - TCUs David Tombrella pitched eight solid innings, holding Oklahoma to one run on six hits as the Frogs defeated the Sooners, 6-1, Tuesday at the TCU Diamond. The Frogs, who have won four straight, improve to 8-5, while the Sooners are now 2-8. Oklahoma had won the last nine meetings between the two teams.
Tombrella relied on his defense, forcing the Sooners to ground out 18 times, including two double plays. The senior righthander walked two, hit two batters and struck out a pair of Sooners. Tombrella was at his best in the middle innings, retiring 11 straight men at one point. Clayton Jerome pitched the final inning, allowing only one base runner. He struck out OUs Sergio Garcia to end the game.
The Frogs took an early 2-0 lead, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. Justin Crowder and Walter Olmstead delivered back-to-back triples down the right field line with Crowder scoring the first run. Olmstead then crossed home plate on a wild pitch, providing TCU with the 2-0 lead. The Frogs added another run in the second on a two-out single by Olmstead, driving in Rudy Rivera who had doubled.
After scoring once in the sixth, TCU added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning. Jason Price led off with a solo home run, his second of the season. Mike Settle walked and came around to score on Riveras single to right field. Olmstead led TCU with two runs batted in and three hits, his eighth multi-hit game of the season. Rivera, Price and Terry Trofholz each had two hits for the Frogs.
Evan Greusel suffered the loss for OU. Greusel allowed three runs on five hits in three innings.
TCU will return to action Friday, February 23, when they travel to San Jose State for the first of three WAC games against the Spartans. First-pitch is scheduled for 9 p.m. central time.
