Gaber to Finals of Flight A Bracket

FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU sent three players to the semifinals of the Flight A bracket at the 2001 Conference USA Individual Women's Tennis Tournament being held at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. Seniors Leoni Weirich and Katrin Gaber met in one semifinal, while sophomore Paty Aburto met Monika Schmid of UAB in the other. Gaber topped Weirich 6-1, 6-2, while Schmid battled Aburto to a 6-3, 0-6, 11-9 win. Gaber and Schmid will meet in the 8:30 a.m. final on Sunday.
Freshman Karla Mancinas advanced in the West Draw of Flight A to tomorrow's final as well. She topped Eva Trujillo-Herrera of Marquette (2-6, 6-0, 11-9) and Jen Baccarani of Houston (3-6, 7-5, 10-5) to move ahead. Rosa Perez will play in the Flight A-Northeast Draw final against Monica Gonzalez-Gordo of Memphis.
In Flight B, Brenna Shackelford qualified for the North Draw final against Cris Reyes of Cincinnati with her win over Jennifer Hatch of Charlotte (6-0, 3-6,10-8). Molly Purdy will play in the finals of the South Draw against Olivia Berry of Southern Miss, who topped Rebecca Reynolds to get to the finals, while Renee Pinkenburg and Emily Waters will battle it out in the Southeast Draw final.
Aburto and Perez will take on Liem/Schmid (UAB) in tomorrow's Flight A Doubles final. Liem/Schmid beat Gaber/Mancinas 8-6 to move to the finals. The team of Shackelford and Weirich will meet Bergman and Cook of Tulane in the finals of Flight B. Reynolds and Waters will take on Eber/Torres of Louisville in the Flight B-South Draw final on Sunday.
The duo of Renee Pinkenburg and Molly Purdy dropped their match against Doyle/O'Handley of Saint Louis 8-5, but beat Pulsinelli/Steer of Saint Louis 8-3 in the round robin of Flight C.
Singles finals begin at 8:30 a.m. Sunday with doubles finals to follow at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
