Frogs Fall in Semifinals of Omni Hotels Southwest Championships

FORT WORTH, Texas - No. 7 seed, TCU senior Katrin Gaber advanced to the semifinals of the Omni Hotels Southwest Championship on Sunday after defeating fourth-seeded Joanne Masongsong of Texas 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Gaber met #2 seed Katja Kovac of Baylor who stopped her in a tough two-set match that went to the tiebreaker in set two (6-4, 7-6). Kovac will meet #3 seed Sarah Borwell of Houston who defeated top-seed Vladka Uhlirova of Texas 6-7, 6-3, 6-2.
Kovac earlier in the day beat TCU senior, and #32 seed, Leoni Weirich in the quarterfinals. After dropping set one 1-6, Weirich battled back to take the second set 6-4. Kovac picked up set three 6-3, and with it the match.
The fifth-seeded duo of sophomore Paty Aburto and junior Rosa Perez defeated #3 Jessica Roland and Majorie Terburgh of Texas A&M in the quarterfinals of the championships 8-5. The score was the same in the semis, however Aburto and Perez fell short against tenth-seeded Beverly Dawson and Irina Tereschenko of Texas Tech. Dawson and Tereschenko will take on #7 Yasmin Fisher and Jeri Gonzales of Rice in Monday's final. Fisher/Gonzales defeated #8 Leah Killen and Martina Nedorostova of Texas A&M in the semifinals (9-7) to advance.
Main draw finals are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 22 at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the TCU campus.
