Fresno State Upsets Soccer Frogs At WAC Tournament

FRESNO, Calif. (Nov. 2) - The TCU women's soccer team came in to the WAC tournament with the third seed, but was upset in the first round by the sixth seeded Bulldogs of Fresno State by a score of 3-1 on November 2. The loss finalized TCU's record at 10-9-1 for the 2000 season, the first winning season the Frogs have had since the 1994 squad finished with a record of 9-8-1.
Fresno State forward Jackie Jewell scored the game's first goal after eight and a half minutes had been played. The Bulldogs tacked on another goal in the first half as WAC Player of the Year Jill Pearson scored her 16th goal of the year. Jewell scored again in the second half to give the Bulldogs a commanding 3-0 lead with 15 minutes left in the match.
The lone TCU goal was scored by sophomore forward Sherry Dick with seven minutes to play. The goal was her 11th of the year, which is the second most by one player in TCU history. Sarah Campbell holds the record with 14 goals back in 1986, the first season of TCU women's soccer.
When asked about TCU's performance in the match, head coach Dave Rubinson said, "We had several chances to score, but we just couldn't finish."
Overall, coach Rubinson was pleased with the team's season saying, "I was really happy with the way our team performed this year, especially when we started 1-2 in the WAC. Our girls showed a lot of heart and really turned things around when we needed to the most."
Sophomore forward Sherry Dick ended the season leading the team in goals (11), points (23), shots (99), shots on goal (40), and game-winning goals (4). Junior midfielder Tiffany Goetz lead the team in assists with five. Forward Jenny Swanson lead all freshman in scoring with seven points, coming off three goals and one assist. Freshman goalkeeper Shannon Wagner finished the season starting all 20 games, recorded 116 saves and shutout her opponents six times.
The match was also the final game for seniors Jackie Rodriguez, Tara Rudiger, Christy Filice, and Jennifer Maunder.
