CHICAGO - TCU tailback LaDainian Tomlinson has been named to the 2000 Walter Camp All-America team, it was announced by the Walter Camp Football Foundation. The oldest and most prestigious of the All-America teams, the Walter Camp team is named after the former Yale captain who helped to pioneer the development of collegiate football.
Tomlinson led the nation in rushing with 2,158 yards and 22 touchdowns. He became the eighth player in NCAA history to surpass the 2,000 yard mark. Troy Davis from Iowa State rushed for at least 2,000 yards in two seasons. Tomlinson ended the year with 176 yards on 26 attempts in TCU's 62-7 win over SMU. He ended his TCU career with 5,263 yards, which placed him sixth in NCAA career rushing yards. Tomlinson' season total was the fourth best in NCAA history.
The Walter Camp team, which is selected in a balloting of head coaches and sports information directors from every NCAA Division I-A school, has been chosen every year since 1889. Camp played on the Yale varsity teams from 1877-82 and served as team captain in 1878, 1879 and 1881. Camp served as Yale's first football coach and from 1876 until 1910 he played an important role in the direction of the technique and strategy of Yale football. He was a member of every rules convention or committee until 1911, being credited with the play from scrimmage, the numerical assessment of goals and tries, the restriction of play to eleven men per side, set plays, sequences, and strategy features which have led to the development of college football as it is known today. He helped to establish the National Collegiate Athletic Association, which provided a control under which collegiate athletics operate even now, and during the First World War he was responsible for the physical conditioning of most of our armed forces.
