Marissa Chew begins her fourth season at TCU in 2025, where she coaches the combined events and vertical jumps.
During the offseason, Coach Chew trains Grenadian athlete Lindon Victor. This past summer, Victor represented his country at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and won a bronze medal in the decathlon with 8,711 total points. Chew also helped him set a national record at the 2023 World Championships when Victor earned a bronze medal with 8,756 points.
Under Chew’s guidance, Joel McFarlane had a standout season in 2024, earning Honorable Mention All-America honors with a 20th-place finish in the decathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. McFarlane also set TCU’s heptathlon school record (5,383 points) at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic and placed sixth at the Big 12 Indoor Championships. Elise Dobson also made strides in the heptathlon, placing 13th at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships with 4,881 points.
Coach Chew has also shaped TCU’s pole vault program. Ben Kirbo set the pole vault school record with a 5.40m (17-8.5) clearance at the Michael Johnson Invitational and also recorded TCU’s highest indoor jump at 5.36m. He finished fifth in the Big 12 Indoor Championships with a vault of 5.33m. On the women’s side, Quinn Calhoun earned a personal-best outdoor leap of 4.11m (13-5.75) at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships, finishing 12th.
In her second season at TCU, she coached Elise Dobson (pentathlon) and Jill Johnson (heptathlon) to Big 12 podium finishes in their first season as collegiate multi athletes. Johnson’s sixth-place finish at the 2023 Big 12 OTF Championships broke the school record in the heptathlon (5037) and Dobson’s eighth-place finish at the 2023 Big 12 ITF Championships (3602) set the school record in the pentathlon.
She also aided Quinn Calhoun and Ben Kirbo to Big 12 podium finishes and spots on TCU’s All-Time Top 10 List in the pole vault. Jade Ferrell set the school record in the outdoor high jump (1.73m) which Johnson tied later in the outdoor season.
Collectively, the 2022-23 season saw three school records, 10 athletes break onto TCU’s All-Time Top 10 List and five podium finishes at the 2023 Big 12 ITF and OTF Championships.
Chew was named to two of the 2023 USATF international coaching staffs. She will travel with USATF as an assistant women's coach to both the 2023 NACAC U23 Championships (July 21-23) in San José, Costa Rica, and the 2023 Thorpe Cup (Aug. 12-13) in Marburg, Germany. She has spent the past two seasons coaching Lindon Victor, the 2022 Commonwealth Games Decathlon Champion. He also finished fifth at the World Championships with 8,474 points.
Chew assisted with sprints in her first season with the Horned Frogs in 2021-22. Her first season with TCU saw immense success as Rob Gregory Jr. (200m) and Bryson Stubblefield, Tinotenda Matiyenga, Kundai Maguranyanga and Gregory (4x100) garnered First Team All-American honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays were ranked in the Top 10 throughout the season. At the Big 12 OTF Championships, the men's 4x100 team won gold for the second consecutive year, clocking a meet record time of 38.50.
During her time at IUPUI, her athletes set 12 school records.
Prior to IUPUI, Chew spent one season at Wabash. She also served as the jumps coach at San Francisco State from 2014-16.
She has achieved the highest certification through USATF as she is trained Level 3 in Jumps. She also has Level 2 training in Jumps, Youth, Combined Events and Sprints/Hurdles/Relays. Through USTFCCA, she also has certification in Strength and Conditioning.
Chew competed on San Francisco State's track & field team from 1999-00 in the long jump and triple jump. She graduated from Long Beach State with a BA in Kinesiology and Physical Education with an emphasis on Secondary Education and a RYAN K-12 teaching credential in 2003.
