JaMarkus McFarland joined the TCU football staff in February 2022 as defensive line coach.
In his first season, McFarland made an immediate impact in the Horned Frogs reaching the College Football Playoff National Championship. He coached Dylan Horton into being a fourth-round NFL Draft pick by the Houston Texans. Horton set a CFP single-game record with 4.0 sacks in TCU's semifinal win over Michigan at the Fiesta Bowl.
The 2023 campaign saw two defensive linemen, Caleb Fox and Damonic Williams, earn All-Big 12 honors under McFarland's tutelage.
Before arriving in Fort Worth, McFarland served three seasons at Stephen F. Austin. As assistant head coach and defensive line coach in 2021, McFarland helped lead the Lumberjacks to an 8-4 record, national ranking and FCS playoff berth.
Under McFarland, the SFA defensive line recorded 27 sacks in 2021. It was part of 40 sacks overall, ranking third in the country. SFA's defense led the WAC in scoring defense, total defense, takeaways, sacks and opponent third down conversion percentage while also placing among the national leaders in each category.
The 2020 season saw SFA top the Southland Conference in pass defense efficiency, interceptions and takeaways while ranking second in scoring defense and total defense.
Prior to SFA, McFarland was a defensive graduate assistant at his alma mater Oklahoma. The Sooners won three straight Big 12 Championships during those years, playing in the 2016 Sugar Bowl, 2017 Rose Bowl and 2018 Orange Bowl.
A native of Lufkin, Texas, McFarland was a four-year letterman at Oklahoma. He earned All-Big 12 honors his senior year when he posted a career-high 28 tackles, including six for loss and three sacks. He totaled 17.0 TFLs and six sacks for his career, helping the Sooners to three Big 12 Championships. He was a three-time First-Team Academic All-Big 12 recipient and an ESPN.com All-Big 12 Freshman Team honoree.
McFarland was signed by the San Diego Chargers in 2013 and by the Canadian Football League’s British Columbia Lions in 2015.
McFarland earned his bachelor’s degree in human relations from Oklahoma in 2012. He received his master’s in human relations, also from OU, in 2017 while recording a 4.0 grade point average.
McFarland and his wife, Shakiyla, have a son, JaMarkus, Jr., and daughter, Savanna.
