Around the Horned With Brian Estridge

Big News in Cowtown:
By now, everyone has heard the announcement that Billy Tubbs will be stepping down at the end of the 2001-02 basketball season. I purposely delayed this column to let it all sink in. Billy's eight years have been memorable both on and off the floor. The 27-win season of 1997-98, coupled with his quick wit, will go down in Frog lore. And even though this is the final season of Billy Ball, don't think for a second that he will let up. Coach really likes this team. He has said countless times that these players have heart, desire to learn and great attitudes. Don't be shocked if he has a few surprises up his sleeve on the way out the door.
Bowl Elimination Game 1:
That is a fitting way to refer to the TCU vs. UAB football game this Saturday afternoon. Watson Brown, the head coach of the Blazers, first used that phrase to describe the game earlier this week during the C-USA Media Teleconference Call. The Frogs essentially have three bowl games leading up to the postseason. You have to believe that with the standings the way they are right now, TCU, UAB and Southern Miss can't afford to lose any of their remaining games to stay in the bowl hunt...stay tuned!
Oh What a Night!:
The TCU women's basketball team held their annual tipoff banquet on Wednesday night in the Kelly Center to a packed house of some 200 fans. Featured speaker Nancy Lieberman capped off the evening with a terrific speech. The Women's Basketball Hall of Famer wowed the crowd, and more importantly, the Frog players, with her message of effort, resiliency and determination. It was a great way to start the year for the Lady Frogs!
