Around the Horned With Brian Estridge
Oct. 10, 2001
Tough to find a rhythm:
This has to be one of the Frogs' strangest football seasons on record, simply because of the schedule. It has been tough for all of us to get into the flow of the season and I know it has been an extra challenge for this coaching staff to prepare this team week in and week out. After our next two games with Tulane and Army, TCU will have 10 days to prepare for East Carolina, 11 days to get ready for UAB, two weeks before the Louisville game and 13 days of preparation for Southern Miss (which has been moved to Dec. 7.) All of the open dates, plus the delayed game, means that TCU will have 25 more practices than normal, which considering the youth of this team is a good thing in order to prepare for next season.
Football recruiting:
Coach Patterson's staff used Monday and Friday of last week as recruiting days, working on developing their list of players that will visit the TCU campus in the next two months. The early word is that the reception they are receiving from coaches and players across the state of Texas has been outstanding! Oh, and speaking of Texas, all 22 starters on this year's team are from the state of Texas. I'm not sure if any other school in Division I can brag about that!
Top-notch golf:
Bill Montigel's golf team impressed again this week, this time at the Red River Classic in Dallas. TCU finishing in third behind Texas and Southern Cal and should stay rated among the nation's top five. The Frogs closed with strong final-day performances by Andy Doeden, Bret Guetz, Adam Rubinson and J.J. Kiileen, all of whom shot under par on the final 18 holes. Rubinson had the low three-round total for the Frogs finishing in a tie for 10th place with a 211. And how about Killeen? The redshirt freshman and former Texas 5A state champ grabbed a tie for 15th. Doeden also finished in the top 20 for the second straight event. Impressively, the Frogs have shot under par in all six rounds that they have played this season. Keep it up boys!
Frogments:
It's a homecoming of sorts for a couple of Frog staffers this weekend, Mike Sinquefield, the Director of Football Operations, and Rich Abadie, the Head Equipment Manager, are both Louisiana natives who will have several family members in the Superdome when the Frogs face Tulane Saturday...Did you catch the live radio broadcast of the TCU vs. Southwest Texas State volleyball match on Tuesday? That voice you heard providing color analysis was none other than former volleyballer Amy Atamanczuk. Amy tells us that if the broadcasting thing doesn't work out, she's probably headed overseas to play professional volleyball...We ran into Michael Center and his lovely wife Allison at the Texas/Oklahoma football game during the Frogs' off-week. Center, the former men's tennis coach at TCU who now leads the Horns, says he is happy, but will always have a special place in his heart for the Frogs...Just released, Jeff Mittie's Lady Frogs are in the preseason top 20 according to Street & Smith and Women's Basketball Magazine...And finally, how about this great news? TCU swimming coach Richard Sybesma will be one of the torch runners for the Winter Olympic games this December, he' ll run in honor of Matt Walters, a former Frog swimmer from the late 1980s who passed away recently... Don't forget, our airtime this Saturday for the TCU vs. Tulane football game is 1:00 on the Network and kickoff is set for 2:30.
From the streets and avenues of North Texas to the information super highway, I'm Brian Estridge. We'll see you on the radio.
