Around the Horned With Brian Estridge
Oct. 5, 2001
On the Right Track:
Well, it may have taken a few weeks longer than Frog fans would have liked, but it looks like the Horned Frogs are beginning to put it all together in football. Saturday night's win against Houston in TCU's Conference USA football debut was just what the doctor ordered heading into the open week. It was an impressive showing by an offense that finally established a running game thanks to sophomore Corey Connally, this week's C-USA Offensive Player of the Week. By the way, he joined Charlie Owens, who was the conference's Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. Have you noticed the "bend but don't break" attitude that has become the Frogs' defensive mantra? While questions still remain in the area of special teams, Coach Dan Sharp will spend much of the open date correcting those problems.
Conference Update:
Early on it looks like UAB may be the surprise team in C-USA this year. Although they dropped their game Saturday to Southern Miss 3-0, Watson Brown's club has been playing terrific defense all year. Of course, Southern Miss and Louisville have been living up to their preseason billing, and East Carolina and TCU have climbed into that pack. The last several weeks of the season are looming large as the Frogs will look to make post-season bowl plans.
Welcome Visitor!:
C-USA Commissioner Mike Slive will be on campus during the week of the Army game. Slive will speak to a group at lunch on the October 19. For details, contact the TCU Alumni office. And speaking of C-USA, the league's athletic directors are meeting this week for a couple of days. Think expansion is on the list of topics?
Frogments:
Did you notice the television sideline analyst for the Frogs on Saturday? Yep, that was WBAP's Hal Jay, who is the father of offensive guard Josh Harbuck. Hal will be back on the field for the next ESPN+ telecast on Nov. 10 when the Frogs face UAB...The TCU/ESPN Regional Sports Network will produce its first-ever volleyball match for radio on Tuesday, October 9 from Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Russell Scott will provide the play-by-play while former TCU volleyball star Amy Atamanczuk will serve as the color analyst. Airtime will be at 6:45 p.m. on KTCU 88.7 FM...The men's soccer program set a Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium attendance record on September 27 versus No. 1 SMU as 713 fans showed up...The Frog golf team remains No. 1 in the country and will be at the Red River Classic in Dallas on Monday and Tuesday next week!
From the streets and avenues of North Texas to the information super highway, I'm Brian Estridge. We'll see you on the radio.
