Around the Horned With Brian Estridge
Sept. 27, 2001
We're No. 1!
How about Bill Montigel and the TCU men's golf team-No. 1 in the nation in this week's rankings! Individually, Steve Shuert is ranked No. 1 and Adam Rubinson (yes, that is the head soccer coach's son) is second nationally. You can catch the team in action in Dallas at the Red River Classic on October 8th and 9th at the Dallas Athletic Club. By the way, in case you were wondering when the last time a Frog team was ranked as the best in the nation, it was the men's track team last year. They finished the season #2 in the final poll.
Life as we know it:
With life returning to normal over the last week, Frog fans have had to live with the tough loss to Northwestern State last weekend. I have worked at an upper-division I-AA program and have seen first-hand the similarities between the two levels. While there may be a 22-scholarship difference, the teams' first-line guys can be as good as many I-A programs. In addition, the schools have an extra benefit concerning transfer rules. I-A players may transfer to a I-AA school and play without sitting out a year. Just to let you know, Northwestern State benefits from 12 such transfers.
Put it to rest:
Let's move on from that Northwestern State game with these final thoughts. There is no doubt that Gary Patterson has this team under control. Mark my words-the Frogs will respond Saturday with an emotional effort in their C-USA debut against Houston. This offense will get going. Matt Schobel is slowly coming back, Reggie Harrell is getting practice reps and Casey is back at 100 percent. That means that this group can finally explode with all of its weapons. My message is simple. Fans, keep the faith. This group deserves it!
Who, When, Where:
Both Billy Tubbs and Jeff Mittie released their basketball schedules this week. The women face Final Four participant Southwest Missouri State as well as NCAA Tournament teams Rutgers, Arkansas, Tulane and Louisville all at home, while the men square off against Creighton, Baylor, Memphis, DePaul and SMU in Fort Worth.
Frogments:
Kudos to Marci King, who became the second player in TCU volleyball history to reach the 1,000-1,000 club (digs and saves)....Monte strikes again. Monte Stratton, the Frogs head track coach, has landed a great addition to his staff to replace Dan Waters. Brad Bowman, the head track and field coach at South Alabama, is the newest member of the Frog family. During his tenure at South Alabama, Bowman's teams captured 29 individual conference championships and established 50 school records!...Congrats to Drew Harris, Associate Media Relations Director, for being named one of three "Horned Frogs on a Mission." This quarterly award recognizes TCU staff members who exemplify the TCU mission statement...The final tally on football season ticket sales is in, and it was another outstanding year. A total of 12,280 season tickets were sold, good enough for second-best all-time!...Don't forget, our airtime this Saturday for the TCU vs. Houston football game is 6:30 on the Network and kickoff is set for 7:00.
From the streets and avenues of North Texas to the information super highway, I'm Brian Estridge. We'll see you on the radio.
