TCU scores seven eighth inning runs
FORT WORTH – TCU wrapped up its homestand with a 12-5 victory over Tarleton State Tuesday at Lupton Stadium. The Horned Frogs broke open a close game with a seven-run eighth inning highlighted by a Rob Liddington grand slam.
The Rundown
Trailing 1-0 heading into the second, the Horned Frogs used a two-out walk to ignite a two-out rally in the frame. Nolan Traeger doubled and Lucas Franco walked to load the bases. Colton Griffin singled to tie the game and Cole Cramer followed with a two-run single to give the Frogs a 3-1 lead.
Tarleton battled back with two runs in the third to tie the game at third. Back-to-back doubles made it a one-run game and a passed ball allowed the tying run to score.
Jack Bell's lead-off single in the fourth turned into the go-ahead run as he scored on a Griffin sacrifice fly to give the Frogs a 4-3 lead.
The Texans threatened to tie the game in the six, but Walter Quinn was able to work out of a first-and-third jam with a lunging catch on a popped up bunt and a strikeout to keep it a 4-3 game. TCU turned that momentum swing into a run in the bottom of the inning as Lucas Franco singled to drive in Bell for a 5-3 lead.
The Frogs broke the game open with seven runs on just three hits in the eighth. A two-out walk to Lucas Franco started the parade of TCU hitters to the plate. Eight straight Frogs reached as they piled on the runs. Cramer drove in the first run of the inning.
After an intentional walk to Sawyer Strosnider loaded the bases, Chase Brunson earned a painful RBI as he was hit by the pitch. Noah Franco legged out an infield single to drive in the third run of the frame. Rob Liddington put the exclamation point on the inning with a grand slam.
Nolan Johnson started and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits in 2 1/3 innings. Tyler Phenow picked up two outs in the third. Cade Nelson (1-0) picked up the win in relief, retiring six of seven batters faced. Quinn tossed two scoreless. Tanner Sagouspe struck out two batters and picked off another in his lone inning of work.
