FORT WORTH – Battling for five sets, No. 15 TCU volleyball defended its home court and earned its fourth straight win over a ranked opponent, knocking off No. 8 Texas A&M in a thriller on Wednesday night in Schollmaier Arena.
With the victory, the Horned Frogs (4-1, 0-0 Big 12) wrapped up a massive stretch of five consecutive matches against top-25 teams, including three in the top 10. One of the hottest teams in the country, TCU broke the program record for most ranked victories in a single season just five matches into 2025. It also marked the 11th straight win at home for the Frogs, dating back to last season.
Freshman Samara Coleman led the way for the Frogs with a career-high 19 kills on a blistering .457 clip. It took just two sets for the highly-touted rookie to surpass her previous best of eight kills as she lit up the Aggies. She was joined by three of her teammates in double figures. Lauren Murphy finished with 13 kills and a team-high three aces. Sophomores Evan Hendrix and Becca Kelley added 10 and 11 kills, respectively, coming alive down the stretch to propel TCU to victory. Hendrix also tallied 16 digs, marking her second straight double-double.
Setters Rosemary Archer and Ella Foti guided the offense to a season-best .292 mark. Foti posted 26 assists and 12 digs, while Archer tallied 23 and eight. Reigning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, Sarah Sylvester lived up to her award. The senior recorded a season-high 11 blocks, including the match-winner with Hendrix.
After being swept on Tuesday, the Aggies came out with a point to prove in the first set. Texas A&M opened up a six-point lead on the Frogs at 16-10, but TCU battled all the way back, fending off three set points. Coleman, who finished with seven kills in the first, tied the set at 24-all with a crucial ace, but the Frogs couldn't complete the comeback as the Texas A&M regrouped with a timeout and took set one, 26-24.
The second set featured 13 ties and six lead changes as both teams went back and forth. It was the Aggies who clung to a one-point lead through the first 15 points, but back-to-back kills from Murphy and an ace from Hendrix sparked a 3-0 scoring run and shifted the momentum. TCU scored five of the final six points to close out the set 25-22 and even the match at one set apiece.
Once again in the third, TCU found itself in a hole. The Frogs trailed by as many as seven as Texas A&M cruised to a 25-19 win in set three.
With its back against the wall, TCU leaned on its block in set four. Sylvester, Murphy and Kelley all made their presence known at the net, holding the Aggies to their lowest hitting percentage of the match at .150. The Frogs opened up a five-point lead at 18-13 and kept their foot on the gas as Hendrix and Kelley combined to score five of the final six points and force a decisive fifth set.
It was about as good a start as TCU could've drawn up to open the fifth set, scoring three unanswered points and forcing Texas A&M to burn an early timeout. The Frogs held a slight 8-6 edge as the two teams switched sides at the halfway point, but a pair of scoring busts put the Aggies up by one at 10-9. Coleman's 19th kill of the match tied things back up at 10 and sparked her teammates.
Sylvester came alive down the stretch, delivering a massive rejection at the net and slamming down one of her seven kills on the night to put the Frogs back in front by two. Kelley inched TCU that much closer with a sharp cross-court kill to induce match point, and Sylvester and Hendrix capped off the match with a stuff block to complete the comeback.
TCU continues a big weekend at home, hosting the annual Fight in the Fort. The Frogs take on Wyoming on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 6:30 p.m. CT and then turn around and play a doubleheader against Rhode Island and No. 23 Missouri on Friday, Sept. 12, at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively.
