The junior is tied for 64th through 18 holes at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa
CARLSBAD, Calif. – Buoyed by a strong back nine, Sofia Barroso Sá kept herself in position to challenge for a spot near the top of the leaderboard of the NCAA National Championships.
Barroso Sá fired a one-under 35 on holes 10-18 on Friday at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa. She concluded her opening round tied for 64th at two-over (74).
Only six teams and 27 players finished even or under par on the first of four days of the stroke play portion of the NCAA Championships.
Tennessee's Bailey Davis leads the individual field at five-under 67.
Barroso Sá played bogey-free following the turn and picked up a birdie on a par-three 16th hole to get her back nine scorecard in the green. She sat one-under through four holes after closing birdie on the second green. Three consecutive bogeys on holes 7-9 positioned her at three-over at the midpoint of her round.
A junior from Portugal, Barroso Sá is competing at the NCAA National Championships for the second time. Barroso Sá advanced to individual play her first year as a Frog in 2023.
She is guaranteed two more rounds on Saturday and Sunday. The nine highest-placing individuals on non-advancing teams play a final round on Monday to determine the NCAA Individual Champion.
Barroso Sá is set to tee off at 4:02 p.m. on Saturday at the 10th tee box alongside fellow individual qualifiers Audrey Ryu (Furman) and Lousiane Gauthier (FGCU).
