Frogs run winning streak to seven games
FORT WORTH – TCU opened league play with a gritty 3-2 win over Arizona State Friday night at Lupton Stadium. The victory moves TCU's winning streak to seven games. Braeden Sloan tossed four scoreless in relief, while Noah Franco led the offense with a home run and two RBIs.
The Rundown
The pitching duo of Tommy LaPour (2-2) and Braeden Sloan were outstanding in holding Arizona State at bay. The Sun Devils scored just two runs (one earned) on six hits and sent the minimum to the plate in six of nine innings.
LaPour's outing ended after five-plus innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits, walked two and struck out three. Sloan tossed four scoreless, hitless innings and tallied four strikeouts to earn the save.
Arizona State tried to open the scoring in the first on a one out triple. Chase Brunson kept the ball from leaving the yard. Isaac Cadena and Anthony Silva executed a perfect relay throw home to cut down the runner trying to beat out an inside the park home run.
The Frogs got on the board in the second. Cole Cramer doubled to lead off the frame and Noah Franco followed with a two-run, opposite field home run to give the Frogs a 2-0 lead.
The lead evaporated in the top of the third as the first two Sun Devils reached. A one out walk loaded the bases. A grounder to first that was overturned, upon review to an out in favor of the Horned Frogs, allowed the first run to score. An errant pick-off throw to second tied the game.
TCU regained the lead in the fourth. Franco opened the inning with his second hit. Brunson's bloop single into left center put runners on the corners. Sawyer Strosnider grounded out to drive in Franco for a 3-2 lead.
Arizona State's last threat in the game came with back-to-back singles to open the sixth. Sloan took over and retired three straight to end the inning.
