AMES, Iowa – Playing its second ranked opponent of the weekend, No. 16 TCU fell to No. 25 Iowa State in four sets on Saturday afternoon inside Hilton Coliseum.
Despite a 23-kill afternoon from Evan Hendrix, the Horned Frogs (18-9, 8-7 Big 12) were unable to dig their way out of early deficits. The sophomore led both teams as she recorded her eighth 20-plus kill match of the season and picked up her 500th career kill in the process.
Backed by a crowd of nearly 4,000 fans, Iowa State took a commanding 13-5 lead after scoring nine straight points. TCU never quit, rattling off a 5-0 run of its own to cut the deficit to four at 17-13, but ran out of steam as the Cyclones finished off the first set with a 25-19 victory.
Iowa State once again built up an early lead in the second. Trailing by five, a kill by Murphy sparked a 5-1 stretch to pull the Frogs within one at 22-21 and force a timeout. However, the Cyclones responded out of the break and scored three of the next four points to win the second set.
Down two sets to none, TCU fought to extend the match. After both teams traded points, TCU rattled off four in a row off kills from Hendrix and Murphy. The Frogs continued to stretch the lead to six at 21-16, before finishing off the third set 25-20.
Fighting to stay alive, TCU quickly fell behind 5-0 to start the fourth set. The Frogs did battle back to tie the match at 16 all, but an 8-1 Iowa State run proved to be too much as the Cyclones won the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.
The Frogs are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 22, hosting Texas Tech at 2 p.m. CT.
