TCU opens home slate Saturday vs. LIU at 7 p.m.
By Drew Rogers
Chase Curtis, a senior tight end for TCU, has become more than just a player on the field, he's developed into a leader and someone his teammates look up to for guidance and inspiration. With years of experience and an understanding of what it takes to succeed in the sport, Curtis has learned to embrace his role as a motivator on and off the field.
Curtis's leadership style comes from his constant commitment to the game and his team. The demand of college athletics can wear on even the most dedicated athletes, but for Curtis, he sees every practice as an opportunity to excel. "It's easy to be tired and not look forward to practice. Whenever I hear we have to practice, it's like you don't have to practice, it's you get to practice."
Changing the narrative from "have to" to "get to" is one of the main ways Curtis continues to inspire his team. "There are a lot of people who wish they were in our shoes, so realizing how blessed you are to play at such a high level makes all the difference."
Leadership is not just about words; it's also about actions. Whether it is pushing through the pain of injuries or showing up every day with a strong work ethic, Curtis embodies what it means to be a leader. "Injuries were tough, especially the first couple because it's hard to not feel like you're drifting away from the team," Curtis admits.
By staying strong and focused, Curtis proves that even with setbacks you can still contribute to the team. "I learned that mental strength is just as important as physical ability. I wanted my teammates to see that no matter what challenges come your way, you can overcome them if you stay focused and positive." Through his actions, he inspires those around him to keep pushing forward, reminding them that they're never truly out of the game as long as they stay committed.
With his final season underway, Curtis reflects on how special TCU and its community are to him. "I play for the name on my back, but I also play for the name on the front and everyone supporting us. I want to play as hard as I can because I know how much time and effort that goes into this. It's not just football, it's the trainers, the equipment staff, coaches, and everyone working behind the scenes. It's about doing everything you can to represent them well."
As Curtis enters this season, he sets the example that true leadership comes from staying strong when things get hard, using tough situations to learn from, and pushing forward to create more positive outcomes.
