No. 23 TCU hosts UTA to kick off Horned Frog Invitational
FORT WORTH – No. 23 TCU continues an eight-match homestand, kicking off the Horned Frog Invitational with a midweek matchup against undefeated UT Arlington on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 6:30 p.m. CT in Schollmaier Arena.
TCU NOTABLES
• For the second straight season, No. 23 TCU is 3-0 at home to start the year after sweeping TAMU Commerce and Prairie View and topping UCLA in four sets.
• Three Frogs earned All-Tournament honors: Cecily Bramschreiber (best defender), Lily Nicholson (best setter) and Melanie Parra (best attacker).
• TCU takes on undefeated UT Arlington on Tuesday to open the Horned Frog Invitational and looks to defend its home court. It hosts Denver and Rice on Friday and Saturday to round out the non-conference slate.
• After cracking the poll for the first time ever a week ago, the Frogs climbed two spots up to No. 23 in the AVCA/TARAFLEX Coaches' Poll this week.
• AVCA National Player and back-to-back Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week Melanie Parra put on yet another offensive clinic at the Fight in the Fort, averaging 7.30 kills and 8.00 kills per set.
• Parra leads the nation with 5.64 kills per set and 6.43 points per set.
• The senior broke the school record last Thursday with 23 kills in a three-set match against Texas A&M Commerce. She now owns both the three and four set records.
• Parra was tabbed the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year as voted on by the conference's head coaches. She is the first Horned Frog to earn this honor.
SERIES HISTORY
• TCU is looking to even the all-time series with UTA at six games apiece. Heading into Tuesday's matchup, the Mavericks hold a 6-5 edge; however, the Frogs have won each of the last four meetings, with the most recent being in 2012.
SCOUTING REPORT
Off to its best start in program history, UT Arlington rides a nine-game winning streak into the midweek match with TCU. The Mavericks, led by head coach J.T. Wenger (eighth season), are one of 16 remaining undefeated teams in the nation. As a team, UTA boasts a .266 hitting percentage and is averaging 13.48 kills per set. Graduate student Brianna Ford leads the offense with 4.55 kills and 5.31 points per set, good for 12th nationally. She is doing so at a very efficient rate, attacking at a .329 rate thanks to her connection with setter Mollie Blank (10.53 assists per set, 22nd in the country). Defensively, the Mavericks are led by middle blocker Paige Reagor, averaging 1.26 rejections per set. The grad student is also a scoring threat, with 82 kills on a .432 clip. Libero Samantha Glenn paces UTA with 3.61 digs per set and helps the Mavericks hold their opponents to a .141 hitting percentage.
23 FOR 23
• Melanie Parra lit up the scoreboard against Texas A&M Commerce, breaking the TCU school record for kills in a three-set match.
• She racked up 23 on a blistering .444 clip to best Amy Atamanczuk's nearly 24-year-old record (22 at Stephen F. Austin, 9/19/00).
• It was almost fitting for Parra, who wears No. 23, to take down the record with 23 kills in front of her father and sister.
• The senior now owns both the three and four set kill records at TCU.
FIGHT IN THE FORT CHAMPIONS
• Playing at home for the first time in 2024, TCU defended its home court at the Fight in the Fort, sweeping TAMU Commerce and Prairie View and dominating UCLA in four sets.
• Under Williams, the Frogs are 20-11 on their home court.
MAKING HISTORY
• For the first time in program history, the TCU volleyball program received a national ranking in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25, checking in at No. 25 on Sept. 9.
• The Frogs climbed two spots in the polls up to No. 23 on Sept. 16 after a 3-0 weekend at the Fight in the Fort.
