TCU aiming for third singles title in six years
FORT WORTH – One tournament into the 2024-25 season and the Horned Frogs are already competing for a championship.
Lui Maxted and Duncan Chan respectively advanced to the singles and doubles final at the Battle in the Bay Classic on Saturday at the California Tennis Club.
Maxted, No. 39 nationally, achieved the highest-ranked win of his four-year TCU tenure to punch his ticket to Sunday's finale. He coasted past 15th-ranked Jay Friend (Arizona), 6-4, 6-4, in the semifinals.
Chan and Michigan State's Danial Rakhmatullayev have partnered in doubles throughout their four-day stay in San Francisco and proven a perfect match. Their latest victims were t of Ozan Baris, the preseason ITA No. 1 singles player, and Matthew Forbes. Chan and Rakhmatullayev defeated the all-Spartan tandem 8-5.
Maxted battles No. 56 Carl Emil Overbeck of California at 3 p.m. CT. Chan first takes the stage at 11:30 a.m. opposite the Golden Bears' Overbeck and Theo Dean.
Sunday's championship victors receive an ATP Challenger Tour wild card onto a series of future events along the west coast.
TCU has won two of the last five Battle in the Bay Classic singles titles. All-Americans Alex Rybakov and Jake Fearnley claimed the crown in 2018 and 2023. A victory from Chan would mark the first time the Horned Frogs have hoisted the doubles chalice.
Julian Alonso and Kaj Quirijns rounded out a full Saturday slate with a pair of victories at the Waco Fall Kickoff Classic.
Alonso snared his first singles win of the season, downing Oklahoma State senior Francisco Pini, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0. He and Quirijns then earned their first doubles victory as partners. The sophomore duo downed LSU's Jamie Diack and Charles Hobbs in a standard tiebreak set to six.
TCU has racked up 12 combined wins over the last three days, eight of which have come in singles play.
