
Tolle Headlines All-Big 12 Selections

Tolle named Big 12 Newcomer and Pitcher of the Year
FORT WORTH – TCU baseball's Payton Tolle headlines a group of seven Horned Frogs to earn All-Big 12 honors. Tolle was tabbed the league's Newcomer and Pitcher of the Year in a vote of league coaches.
Joining Tolle as a first team all-conference selection was reliever Ben Abeldt. The quartet of Kurtis Byrne, Zachary Cawyer, Logan Maxwell and Sam Myers earned honorable mention honors. Myers was joined on the Big 12 All-Freshman team by Chase Brunson.
Tolle is the first player to win both pitcher and newcomer awards in the same season from any school and becomes the second Horned Frog to win each of the awards. In total, TCU has now produced seven conference Pitchers of the Year. Tolle is the first since Preston Morrison last won the accolade in 2014. Additionally, Tolle is the first Newcomer of the Year since Jake Guenther who was selected in 2019.
Tolle has put together an outstanding year on the mound, leading the league with a 2.96 ERA and 116 strikeouts over 76 innings. In 13 starts, he is 7-3 and has been the starting pitcher for three of TCU's four shutouts on the year. He was even better in 10 league starts, posting a 6-3 record to go along with a 2.26 ERA. He has totaled 94 strikeouts over 63 2/3 innings of work.
Abeldt has a team-high 25 appearances on the year. He is 2-0 with eight saves and boasts a 1.83 ERA. Abeldt has 45 strikeouts in 39 1/3 innings of work. In league play, Abeldt appeared in 16 games and went 2-0 with five saves. He fanned 34 in 30 innings of work, posting a 1.50 ERA.
Byrne, now a two-time honorable mention All-Big 12 performer, has made a team-high 48 starts. He is hitting .257 on the year with a team-high 10 doubles, six home runs and 37 RBIs.
Cawyer ranks second on the team with 21 appearances on the mound. He sits second on the squad with a 6-2 record and owns a 4.81 ERA. He has racked up 37 strikeouts in 33 2/3 innings. In league play, he ranked second on the team with 12 appearances. He posted a 2-1 record with a 4.26 ERA in 19 innings of work.
Maxwell is TCU's leading hitter this season, posting a .342 average in 43 games played. He leads the team with 54 hits, including 12 doubles, two triples and three home runs. He has 23 RBIs on the year to go along with 10 stolen bases. In league play, he hit .333 with six doubles, two triples, three home runs and 17 RBIs.
Myers has had a tremendous start to his collegiate career. In 44 games, he is TCU's second-leading hitter with a .340 average. Of his 53 hits, he has nine doubles, three triples and two home runs to go along with 21 RBIs. He was TCU's leading hitter in Big 12 play with a .358 average.
Brunson also turned in a solid freshman campaign, hitting .311 in 39 games. Of his 41 hits on the year, eight have been doubles and four home runs. He drove in 23 runs and picked up four stolen bases. In 23 league games, he hit .278 with 12 RBIs.
TCU opens play in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championships Tuesday afternoon against West Virginia. First pitch is slated for 12:30 p.m. The contest will be televised on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
