Sophomore is third among all Big 12 players through 18 holes
RIO GRANDE, P.R. – A special sophomore season is brewing for Sofia Barroso Sa.
The Portugal native is tied for 12h at one-under 71 through the first 18 holes of the Purdue Puerto Rico Classic at Grand Reserve Golf Club.
Barroso Sa carded birdies on two of her first four holes of the three-day affair to force a tie for first. She maintained her two-under-par scorecard across her first 10 holes of play.
The strong showing in the tropics arrives on the heels of her best performance in purple and white. Barroso Sa is eight-under over her last 36 holes representing TCU, having placed 14th behind a final round score of 65 (7-under) at the Jim West Invitational in October.
Collectively, TCU occupies 13th place at plus-eight (296) amidst a field that features seven teams in the top-50 of the Spikemark NCAA women's golf rankings. The Horned Frogs were tied for fifth at one-under-par with eight holes to go.
Kirstin Angosta shined alongside Barroso Sa, forcing a tie for 30th at one-over (72). The freshman, who made her collegiate debut on Sunday in the Caribbean, birdied two of her first nine holes.
Rounding out the Horned Forgs' team scorecard were upperclassmen Lois Lau and Meagan Winans, who sit tied for 55thand 65th, respectively. Lau punctuated her first round three-over while Winans is plus-five.
Freshman Charlotte Cattaneo, whose score does not factor into TCU's team mark, finished 13-over.
