Is taking a medical redshirt and intends to return to TCU in 2025-26
FORT WORTH – Maddie Scherr is taking a medical redshirt due to a back injury and will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season, TCU announced on Thursday.
Scherr intends to return to TCU and play her final college season in 2025-26.
"Having to sit out for the first time in my career has been very tough," she said. "I would give anything to battle with my teammates on the floor. However, I believe God has a plan for me no matter the circumstances. I transferred here in April to help this program and play for coach Campbell, who has supported me since day one. That goal has not changed. I will be supporting my teammates every step of the way this season and am already looking forward to putting that TCU jersey on next year."
A graduate student from Florence, Ky., Scherr played the past two seasons at Kentucky, starting every game as the Wildcats' primary ball handler. She averaged 12 points, five rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.9 steals per game over her two-year run in Lexington. Scherr led the SEC in free throw percentage (.912) her junior year in 2022-23 and also ranked fourth among her conference peers in assists per game (4.3) and steals (55).
Scherr was originally recruited by Campbell to Oregon out of Ryle High School, where she was twice crowned Kentucky Gatorade Player of the Year in 2019 and 2020. She helped guide the Ducks to the Sweet 16 of the 2021 NCAA Tournament as a freshman in Campbell's final season as Oregon's associate head coach. Scherr started 28 of 31 games and dished out a team-leading 102 assists the following year.
No. 9 TCU (9-0) returns to action at 6 p.m. on Sunday at Dickies Arena in a primetime matchup vs. third-ranked and reigning national champion South Carolina. The game is a part of the annual U.S. LBM Coast to Coast Challenge and airs on ESPN2. It will be the first top-10 matchup in TCU women's basketball history and represents the first time the defending NCAA champion has visited Fort Worth in nonconference play.
