Horned Frog duo secures final weekly honors of the season
IRVING, Texas – TCU volleyball's Melanie Parra and Sarah Sylvester wrapped up one of the most successful regular seasons in program history, earning Big 12 Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors, the conference announced Tuesday.
The duo was key in helping lead the Horned Frogs to victories over West Virginia and Cincinnati to secure their first 20-win season since 2011and a fifth-place finish in the Big 12 with a program-best 13 wins in conference play.
For Parra, it marks her conference single-season record-tying sixth Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week award. She joins Katie Staiger (Baylor, 2016) and Destinee Hooker (Texas, 2009) as the only players in Big 12 history to accomplish the feat.
In TCU's two matches, the senior posted a league-leading 5.86 kills per set, 1.00 aces per set and 7.21 points per set. Parra tallied double-doubles in both wins, including a 17 kill night to eclipse 500 kills on the season and a 24 kill and six ace performance in the Frogs' win over Cincinnati to pick up her 1,000th kill in a TCU uniform. With 531 total kills in 28 regular season matches, the Sinaloa, Mexico, product added her name to the record books for the most kills in the rally scoring era in program history.
Sylvester grabbed her second Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honor this season and third of her career. One of the best middle blockers in the conference this year, she finished the regular season ranked second in the Big 12 with 140 total blocks (1.32 per set).
Last week, Sylvester led the league with 2.00 blocks per set as the Frogs went 2-0. A force at the net, the junior helped TCU hold its opponents to a combined .162 clip, the second lowest in the conference over the two-match span. While her defense shined, the Livonia, Michigan, native was also extremely efficient offensively, hitting .750 on the week with 13 kills on 16 swings. Against Cincinnati, she stepped up in the Frogs' record-setting 13th victory in conference play, tallying a season-best 11 blocks.
No. 20 TCU takes on Hawaii on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m. CT in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, Oregon.
