Parra becomes first Horned Frog to be named First Team All-American
FORT WORTH – TCU senior outside hitter Melanie Parra capped off her historic 2024 season by earning American Volleyball Coaches Association First Team All-American Honors, the AVCA announced on Wednesday.
Parra is the first player in TCU history to be named First Team All-American and is the only Horned Frog with multiple All-American honors in her career.
It marks the second straight season that Parra has earned an AVCA All-American nod. Last year, she became the first player in program history to be named to one of the three AVCA All-American teams as the previous five Horned Frogs all garnered All-American Honorable Mention honors. She is the sixth TCU player to earn AVCA All-American honors and the third in the Big 12 Era.
One of 14 players named to the first team in 2024, Parra, the Big 12 Player of the Year and AVCA Southwest Region Player of the Year, cemented herself as one of the nation's best attackers.
No stranger to AVCA recognition this season, Parra became the first and only player in Division I women's volleyball history to earn back-to-back National Player of the Week honors (Sept. 10 & 17), was named a Semifinalist for the Division I Player of the Year Award and helped TCU receive a national ranking for the first time in program history.
In her senior campaign, she eclipsed the 500-kill mark, becoming the 24th player in Big 12 history in the rally-scoring era to accomplish the feat. With 669.5 points and 573 kills on the season, Parra led all Power 4 players in both categories. She rewrote the TCU record books, breaking her own single-season program record set a year ago for points and passing Ellen Rehme (501, 2004) for the most kills in a campaign in the rally-scoring era. She also recorded 59 service aces on the year, the most in a single season in school history.
The Sinaloa, Mexico, native was critical in leading TCU to its first 20-win season since 2011, including a program-record 13 victories in Big 12 play. Starting in 29 matches and playing all but one set, Parra tallied double-digit kills in 28 contests, including 14 with at least 20 kills. She also recorded a team-best 15 double-doubles while ranking top five nationally in six offensive categories.
Her 2024 season was full of milestones and accolades. Parra garnered six Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week awards, tied for the most in a single season in conference history, and picked up her 1,000th career kill and 1,000th kill as a Horned Frog, becoming the 14th player in TCU history to accomplish the feat.
She led the Frogs to their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Against Hawaii, Parra broke her own program record for kills in a three-set match set earlier this season, racking up 24 on a .302 clip to send TCU into the Round of 32 for the third time in as many years.
Parra was the only player to represent the Big 12 on the first team and one of 10 athletes in the conference to earn All-American honors. The full list of AVCA All-Americans can be found here.
