WACO - Jade Otway and Isabel Pascual of the TCU women's tennis team won in the round of 32 in the NCAA Doubles Championships today, advancing to the round of 16. They are the first TCU doubles team to advance to the round of 16 in 14 years, when Kayla Duncan and Katariina Tuohimaa did so in 2010.
The duo defeated Georgia Tech's Alejandra Cruz and Given Roach in straight sets, winning 7-5, 6-4.
Otway and Pascual started the match well, coming out to a 3-1 lead before a Yellow Jacket comeback brought the score to 4-5. Although being at set point, Pascual held to even the score at 5-5, and the Frogs never looked back, winning three games in a row. Following a break of Georgia Tech's serve, Otway served to win the first set 7-5.
"We know how tight doubles can be, we were literally a set point down and then after that we switched it and then we were 7-5 up, in doubles that happens a lot," said Pascual.
Following a Yellow Jacket hold to open the set, the Horned Frogs fired back, winning three games in a row. From there, the Frogs never looked back, winning the set 6-4 to clinch the match.
"It feels unbelievable to get the win. We didn't play our best tennis today but we got the job done and we communicated well. I think it's an exciting feeling to get such a high-level win and not play our greatest," Otway said.
Otway and Pascual are the first doubles team from TCU to win a game in the NCAA Individual Championship since 2010, along with the program's first doubles team to reach the round of 16 since 2010. It is also TCU's first win at the NCAA Individual Championships since 2015, when Simona Parajova took down Lauren Marker of Arizona in the singles round of 64.
The duo will return to action tomorrow, Nov. 21 for the round of 16. They will face Colorado's Anya Nelson and Ema Bubalo at 2 p.m. CT at Hurd Tennis Center. Information regarding the match can be found here.
