KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The No. 7 ranked TCU women's soccer team defeated Colorado, 3-1 in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship on Saturday afternoon at CPKC Stadium. Three different Horned Frogs netted goals as Camryn Lancaster, Seven Castain and Caroline Kelly all found the back of the net. Megan Plaschko made two saves in the contest.
The Rundown
In the opening minute of the contest, Colorado scored off a handspring throw that traveled all the way to the box. A Buffalo forward headed the ball in to give the Buffaloes an early 1-0 advantage.
The Frogs worked the ball around the pitch for the opening 30 minutes and did not fire off their first shot of the contest until the 18th minute, but it was a quality look as Oli Pena's bid from outside the 18 just cleared the crossbar. Morgan Brown found a similar look in 19th minute with TCU's second shot of the half as she fired a rocket just high.
The hard work paid off as Camryn Lancaster tallied the equalizer in the 30th minute. Brown's pass to Lancaster was deflected by the Colorado defense but Castain gathered the rebound and found Lancaster crashing down from the top of the box. Lancaster gathered the ball with one touch with her left foot before switching to her right foot to deliver a shot to the bottom right of the goal.
In the second half, the Frogs controlled possession for most of the period. Cameron Patton's cross attempt caught a Buffalo defender for handball inside the box in the 74th minute, awarding the Frogs a penalty kick. Castain converted the penalty kick for a 2-1 lead.
In the 80th minute, Missouri native Caroline Kelly put the game away. She dribbled the ball down the left side of the box and crossed the ball over to her right foot and delivered a cross-body shot to left side of the goal just past the outstretched arms of the Colorado keeper for a 3-1 lead.
Quote of the Game
Head Coach Eric Bell
Thoughts on the game
"Really proud of our group for the response that they had after giving up a goal in the first minute of the game. They stayed the course and did not panic. We did the things that we do to be successful. We got a goal in the first half and added a couple in the second half. I thought it was awesome."
