Junior ranks among the league’s best middle blockers
IRVING, Texas – Sarah Sylvester was named Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Week after recording 13 rejections and moving into a tie for eighth on TCU's top 10 all-time blocks list, the conference announced Tuesday.
It marks the second career weekly honor for Sylvester. Last season, she won the award after breaking the school record for blocks in a three-set match on Sept. 12.
One of the best middle blockers in the conference this season, Sylvester ranks second in the Big 12 with 1.27 blocks per set and is one of just five athletes in the league with triple-digit rejections this year (116). The junior is also rewriting the record books at TCU, cracking the top 10 in program history on Nov. 7 and continuing her climb last week, passing Kristen Hester (288, 2008-11) and tying Yvonne Igodan (299, 2010-13) for eighth on the TCU top 10 career blocks list.
Last week, Sylvester led the Big 12 with 13 total blocks and 1.86 blocks per set. Against No. 12 Kansas, she racked up seven total blocks while helping the Frogs hold the Jayhawks to their third lowest hitting percentage of the year. The Livonia, Michigan, native followed it up with six blocks at Kansas State, marking her 13th match this season with at least five rejections at the net.
Sylvester and No. 22 TCU are back in action in Schollmaier Arena for its final two home matches of the regular season on Wednesday, Nov. 20, against Houston and Friday, Nov. 22, against Texas Tech.
