TCU star in the running for national player of the year
LEXINGTON, Ky. – TCU senior outside hitter Melanie Parra has been named a semifinalist for the AVCA's 2024 Division I Player of the Year Award presented by Nike Volleyball, the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced on Wednesday.
Earlier this season, Parra was named to the inaugural watch list for the award, which is presented to the nation's top volleyball player. The AVCA's highest honor, the recipient is chosen by a committee of head coaches for each collegiate level.
The list of semifinalists includes 14 players from 11 schools, featuring some of the top talent in the country. The names will be revealed in groups of seven over two days — Wednesday, Nov. 13, and Thursday, Nov. 14 — with the option to add more players before the finalists are announced.
Through 22 matches this season, Parra's offensive prowess has been on full display. She ranks fourth in the nation with 5.86 points per set and 5.08 kills per set and is doing so against some of the best teams in the country, including Baylor, BYU, Minnesota and Nebraska, among others.
One of the Big 12's best, she has earned five Player of the Week honors, one shy of tying the conference's single-season record, and was the first player to win three consecutive Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week titles to start the season since 2020 (Logan Eggleston, Texas).
Parra has logged at least 20 kills in half her matches this season, including a pair of 30 kill performances against No. 18 Minnesota and UCLA. With over 400 kills this year and nearly 500 points scored, the Sinaloa, Mexico, native is on pace for a historic season.
No stranger to AVCA recognition, Parra became the first player in Division I women's volleyball history to earn back-to-back National Player of the Week honors (Sept. 10 & 17), helped No. 23 TCU receive a national ranking for the first time in program history and was a 2023 Third Team All-American.
The semifinalists will be narrowed down to a group of finalists in December, right before the AVCA Convention. The 2024 AVCA Player of the Year will be named on Friday, Dec. 20, in Louisville, Kentucky, during the AVCA Convention.
