TCU senior leads the conference in points and kills per set
IRVING, Texas – For the fifth time in eight weeks, TCU volleyball senior Melanie Parra has been named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
With five weekly honors on the season, Parra is just one away from tying the conference's single-season record. It also marked her seventh career weekly award from the Big 12, the most by any Horned Frog in program history, passing Audrey Nalls and élan McCall (6).
Parra led the Big 12 with a blistering 6.93 points per set and 5.86 kills per set on the week as TCU went 2-0, picking up a road sweep at Texas Tech and a win over Cincinnati at home. The senior outside totaled 41 kills on 87 attempts for a .379 clip. She was also strong at the service line, averaging nearly an ace per set. But the highlight of the weekend was Parra's 1,000th career kill.
On Wednesday, the Sinaloa, Mexico, native helped the Frogs secure their first sweep over the Red Raiders in Lubbock since 2015. Parra picked up an easy 19 kills on .400 hitting while adding 10 digs for her eighth double-double of the season.
Against Cincinnati, Parra finished with 22 kills on a .362 clip for her 10th match this year with 20-plus. After entering the day with 983 kills, the senior became the 14th player in TCU history to record her 1,000th career kill, accomplishing the feat in the third set.
Parra and No. 18 TCU (14-4, 6-2 Big 12) travel to Waco for a rivalry match with No. 23 Baylor on Friday, Oct. 25, at 5 p.m. CT.
