Gorzny, Pinnington and Maxted all advanced in singles
SAN FRANCISCO – TCU men's tennis ignited the 2023-24 season in trademark fashion, pocketing four victories on day one of the Battle in the Bay Classic on Thursday.
The Horned Frogs triumphed in three-of-four opening-round singles tilts and sent one doubles tandem through to Friday's quarterfinals.
Lui Maxted and Jack Pinnington bagged two wins apiece.
Playing doubles together for the first time collegiately, the Brits staked TCU to its first victory of the season. Maxted in Pinnington staved off Stanford's Anders Matta and Neel Rajesh 8-7. A 7-point tiebreaker was used to declare a victor in the 8-point pro set. Maxted and Pinnington claimed the tiebreaker 7-1 to pencil in a quarterfinal bout opposite Karlis Ozolins and Alex Petrov of Illinois.
Maxted, No. 123 in the preseason ITA singles rankings, secured a monumental singles result at the expense of the 54th-ranked Petrov. The junior completed a 6-7 [2-7], 6-2, 6-4 comeback vs. Petrov, earning his highest-ranked singles victory along the way.
Pinnington and Sebastian Gorzny, ranked No. 26 and No. 43 nationally in singles, followed with strong season-opening statements. Gorzny blasted Matta 6-0, 6-1. Pinnington hung an identical score on San Francisco's Moritz Hoffmann shortly thereafter.
Maxted moves on to face No. 9 Inaki Montes-De La Torre in the round of 16 on Friday. Pinnington is set to battle No. 125 Max McKennon for a spot in the quarterfinals. Gorzny draws No. 27 Iiro Vasa of San Diego with a shot at securing his highest-ranked collegiate singles win.
The lone singles setback for the Horned Frogs was the result of an injury. Pedro Vives was forced to retire from his singles match vs. UC San Diego's Ryan Torres in the first set after his back seized up.
Because doubles matches are contested as 8-point pro sets, the likelihood of an upset increases. Gorzny and Vives, ranked 13th nationally, fell victim to the circumstance, as they dropped their first round match 6-8 to Gianluca Brunkow and Pablo Masjuan of UC Santa Barbara.
Day two of the tournament commences at 11 a.m. CT with doubles play, Singles matches for all three Horned Frogs are slated to follow around 12:30 p.m.
